THE ULTIMATE BREAK UP GUIDE
It starts so innocently - creating an account where you can share what you are passionate about with your friends. A like here, a comment there, joy over a new follower on the journey with you.
And then, it changes. Business hours start to go from 9-5 to 24/7. How good your product or service is depends on how many likes you get. Before you know it you are doom scrolling into the early hours of the morning, obsessively consuming content on how to go viral, licking up the validation of the pink camera popping up on our screen — and totally convinced that your businesses success depends on this tiny little app rewarding you with its confusing algorithm.
Hi, I’m Erica, and I was obsessed with instagram for the better part of a decade.
Instagram was a toxic ex I couldn’t stay away from. I was addicted. It determined how I felt about myself, my life, my success, my body, my passions —
Because I was my brand — I was the only one on my team, the founder, the marketing agent, the sales expert, the admin, I thought that I was doomed to be in this cycle of neverending seeking because social media was supposedly the most easy and free way to market yourself.
I was marketing myself, constantly. My camera storage became a series of b-roll rather than memories, I was turning my problems into posts in real times, I was fucking exhausted. It didn’t seem like there was a way out.
Even with a degree hanging on my wall that should have made me an expert in “other ways”, I was sucked into the belief that Instagram was the be all or end all of my business.
but i was wrong…
It wasn’t long before I started noticing the signs…
I was in a toxic relationship (again) but this time my lover was instagram.
My needs weren’t being met and I was addicted. I kept thinking that I was the problem. If I could just be better it would work for me. I just wanted to please the algorithm. The tiny news feed became a god to me and I was but a lowly peasant at its service. The Ten Commandments of Instagram had me completely devoted. I didn’t think I could leave. And the truth is, I couldn’t…
Not until I learnt new ways to market myself that worked, and didn’t require me to be dependent on Instagram for my leads and needs.
What I learnt first blew my mind
Earlier in the year Neil Patel published a study that showed while most companies spend an average of 38% of their time on organic social media, it only accounted for 2.3 % of their revenue.
It got me thinking — Social media isn’t designed for sales conversions and marketing, hell you get in trouble for suggesting people go to the link in your bio. Its purely designed to keep people on the app for as long as posisble. So why was it my front and center marketing tool? Why had it worked its way to the top of the pile, and how could I make myself less dependent on it.
I redesigned a whole new strategy. I audited my business structure to see where I had skipped foundational layers in favor of scrolling, where I could support the weight of my goals and dreams with solid clarity.
And I saw success in the first month, so I took time off social media to pursue this. It worked. I could finally friendzone Instagram because:
1. I wasn’t dependent on it as my only method of marketing or lead generation
2. I was able to use social media for what it is designed for and build a healthy relationship with it (that I can leave at any time).
Do you need to friendzone instagram?
do you feel like you can’t leave Instagram even though it isn’t meeting your business, personal or mental health needs?
do you think it’s impossible to be successful without 1000s of followers?
do you have no other lead generation strategy?
are all your eggs in the Instagram basket?
do you feel powerless and at the algorithm’s mercy?
do you spend more time trying to understand Instagram than getting better / practising your craft?
do you care more about likes, comments and shares than genuine sales and conversions?
do you feel like you don’t have any time left to do things you want to enjoy?
can you make money without being active on social media?
do you feel the pressure to “show up” and overshare in order to make a sale?
has everything in your life become “content” instead of memories?
And lastly… are your people actually clicking off Instagram consistently to follow your leads? Are you making sales while you sleep?
